Cooking with Maple For Adults: Maple Toffee and Maple Caramel @ Cincinnati Nature Center, Rowe Woods

We’ll start by transforming fresh maple syrup into maple sugar. From there, this participatory class will create two maple treats: maple toffee with dark chocolate and nuts and salted maple caramel. Bring your apron and come prepared to stir. Participants will take home some of our delicacies.

Walk hand in hand to the sugarbush in the soft light of a lantern while enjoying a maple historical talk. Marvel at the glowing hot rocks used in ancient rock boiling while sharing a savory maple hors d’oeuvre. Learn how maple toffee is made while sipping on maple cocktails and discover which cheeses pair well with maple syrup while inhaling the steam in the sugarhouse.  This tour couples the historical and modern day production of maple syrup with maple-related dishes and beverages to delight the senses.

Member couples $35; nonmember couples $50 (includes daily admission).

Maple syrup is not just for pancakes.  In this cooking class, you’ll learn how maple syrup can be utilized to elevate and add interest to your culinary endeavors. We’ll touch on using maple syrup in salad dressing, as a glaze on meat, as a substitute for sugar in baking, in desserts, in beverages and more. Chocked with sample bites and infused with maple sugaring history and lore, you’ll depart with a deeper understanding of maple syrup.

Woodcock Walk @ Cincinnati Nature Center, Rowe Woods

Join naturalists Connie O’Connor and Sheila Riley for a talk and walk about woodcocks beginning at 7:15 pm.  Adults and children (12 years and up) will take a brisk walk to the fields across Tealtown Road to stand very still and wait for the action to begin.  First you will hear them, then you will see their flight against the darkening sky.  Woodcocks are a secretive game bird and the best part of the “mud season.” Expect to be here for about an hour and a half total to learn about these fascinating birds. Preregistration is required. Members $5; nonmembers $10 (includes daily admission).
